ATT-VTF Funded Projects Implemented by RECSA

 

This ongoing RECSA initiative (2019–2025), funded by the ATT Voluntary Trust Fund, promotes responsible arms transfers by supporting ATT implementation in six member states. It strengthens legislation, capacity, and cooperation, engaging over 800 stakeholders to enhance national arms control systems and prevent illicit arms trafficking.

About the Initiative
The Arms Trade Treaty (ATT) aims to prevent illicit arms trafficking through responsible arms transfers. RECSA, with its funding support from the ATT VTF funding, has driven ATT implementation in Ethiopia, Rwanda, Kenya, Sudan, South Sudan, and Tanzania, strengthening national arms control systems and fostering regional cooperation.

Key Objectives

  • Raise awareness of ATT obligations among stakeholders.
  • Support legislative alignment with ATT standards.
  • Enhance SALW capacity for SALW marking, recordkeeping, and tracing.
  • Promote multi-stakeholder engagement for treaty implementation.

What We Achieved

  • National Strategies: Developed ATT accession strategies in South Sudan and Sudan.
  • Stakeholder Engagement: Reached over 800 stakeholders across six countries, including 280 in Kenya.
  • Capacity Building: Provided marking machines in Tanzania and trained personnel in WAM/PSSMs.
  • Legislative Progress: Advanced legal reforms in Kenya and South Sudan.

Cross-sectoral stakeholder engagement ensures sustainability. Flexible project designs adapt to volatile contexts. Regional coordination enhances peer learning.
